THE CURATOR PRESENTS… UNCOVERING SECRETS

Special Presentation & Exhibit Grand Opening| Sun OCT 21 | 2:00-3:00 pm

The new exhibit Uncovering Secrets: Archaeology in southern Alberta at the Galt Museum & Archives - produced by the Galt with community advisors – explores some of the fascinating prehistoric and historic archaeological sites found in southern Alberta and is the topic of a special presentation on Sunday, October 21 at 2:00 pm as part of The Curator Presents… series, to celebrate the exhibit’s official opening.

Wendy Aitkens, Curator at the Galt, will examine how, why and where archaeologists search for human stories resting on prairie sod, hidden under layers of soil, recorded in volumes of historical documents, stored in museum collections, and painted or carved into rocks.  She will also introduce people who spend their lives searching and digging for those stories.

The Curator Presents… series is held three times annually, with invited guest lecturers or Aitkens herself presenting in-depth discussion on current special exhibits at the Galt.

“Museums are ideal places to tell stories and I love sharing stories of past and present people, events and activities,” says Aitkens, who has immersed herself in museum work for over 22 years. Currently, Aitkens is piecing together the story of Miss Edith Fanny Kirk, Lethbridge’s first art teacher, compiling research through archives and museum in places such as Sheffield, England, Atlin, BC, and St. John, NB.

Admission fees apply for the presentation which is free to annual pass and invitation holders, and includes access to Uncovering Secrets: Archaeology in southern Alberta closing January 13, 2013.
