Superheroes Dinner & Dance Cancelled

Lethbridge — Tickets sales for the Scott McCloud and Dr. Roberta Bondar lectures for this week’s Nerd Fest at the Galt Museum & Archives are heating up, but it seems the Superheroes Dinner & Dance scheduled for March 23 has not sparked the interest organizers expected.

“Unfortunately, we have to cancel the event – not enough tickets have sold to make it the happening evening we were planning,” says Chris Roedler, Resource Development Coordinator at the Galt. “Those holding tickets will receive a full refund, and we would encourage them to attend the Pop Culture Trivia Night or the All Night Games Night on March 22 in their planned superhero costumes – we will be awarding prizes!”

“We are definitely a go for the rest of our Nerd Fest events,” says Roedler. These include a public lecture on the history of comic books with leading comic book artist Scott McCloud, followed by his sold-out two-day workshop, a talk by Canada’s first neurologist in space, astronaut Dr. Roberta Bondar, a pop culture movie trivia night, and an all night games night.

The Galt will also continue to join institutions around the world for Earth Hour on March 23 beginning at 8:30 pm as planned, by shutting off the lights on the east side of the historic 1910 Galt Hospital façade. This year, Earth Hour was to be a part the Superheroes Dinner & Dance. The Galt also goes beyond the hour throughout the year by turning off the lights daily at 1:00 am (the building used to be lit up throughout the night), and encourages its staff and volunteers to participate too. Where possible, the Galt incorporates LED and halogen bulbs to help reduce its electricity consumption.

Nerd Fest is made possible in part by festival funds raised through Taste of Downtown and coincides with the current exhibit “Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame”, on loan from the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa until May 19.
