Sock Monkeys… Not Just for Kids

all ages program | Sun SEP 15.13 | 1:00-5:00 pm | admission rates apply

Sock monkeys – they’re not just for kids! The Galt Museum & Archives’ popular sock monkey program returns on Sunday, September 15 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm, this time as an opportunity for all ages to put a colourful modern twist on a historic craft that dates back to the Great Depression.

“Originally sock monkeys were made from recycled socks,” says Leslie Hall, Community Program Coordinator for the Galt. “We use new socks, and they are very colourful!”

“We have previously offered sock monkey making as a family program, but we know there are students and adults out there who want to make them too!”

Galt volunteers have done the majority of the sewing; participants will stuff, do the hand-sewing for assembly, and personalize their own sock monkey. Sewing lessons are also on offer for those who don’t know how. A note though, this program will take inexperienced sewers two hours, so plan to arrive in time to complete your project.

Admission fees apply: $6 for adults, $5 seniors; $3 students and ages 7-17; and $15 for families, which includes supplies as well as access to the Discovery Hall. The Sock Monkeys program is free for annual pass holders.
