MAY-AUGUST SEES CONTINUATION OF POPULAR ‘ARCHIVES PROGRAM’

Monthly Archives Program | Thursdays 7:00 pm

The new Archives Program at the Galt Museum & Archives has helped to do away with the perceived mystery surrounding archives since first being introduced in January, through monthly topics presented by Archivist Andrew Chernevych and special guests on Thursdays from 7:00-9:00 pm. The series continues through the summer with the following:

Thu MAY 10 Who? Where? When? The Old-timers’ Challenge Do you remember the good old days? Many archival pictures are still a mystery because we don't know who/what is photographed, where, when and why. A photo becomes a historical record only when we have answers to these essential questions. Help us reveal people and places on old photographs... by sharing your memories, we can save local history that might otherwise be forgotten.

Thu JUN 28 Research Your Roots Evelyn Laqua from the Lethbridge Family History Center will explain how to research your family history. The presentation will cover relevant publications, archival search methods, online resources, and specialized services like Ancestry.ca. You will also learn how to organize this information and share it with your family and friends.

Thu JUL 26 Donating Papers to the Archives There is the notion that only people of status can have their papers at archives. This is not true. Everybody who has records of historical significance – diaries, photographs, letters, etc.  – can place them at the Galt Archives. Come learn about appraisal criteria, procedures, and certificate of gift. The workshop covers personal papers as well as organizational records of all types. Donating papers to the archives ensures not only physical preservation but also place in history. Better than writing on stone!

Thu AUG 09 From Album to Memory Stick Local photographer Jaime Vedres and the Galt Archivist will teach you how to convert your family pictures into digital images, improve their quality, organize the collection, and back it up for better preservation. The session will cover scanning techniques, formats and simple tricks like scratch removal. This workshop is oriented towards individuals with only basic computer skills.

Admission fees apply for the program; registration is not required. Adults pay $5, seniors and students $4, which includes exhibit access. The Discovery Hall and Museum Store are also open Thursdays from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. For details visit www.galtmuseum.com, call 403.320-3954, or email info@galtmuseum.com
