Galt Iinii (Buffalo) Harvest (2023) Accession Number: 20251082
Iini (Buffalo) harvests have always been part of Blackfoot culture and ceremony. This is a communal process involving all members (men, women, children, Elders). Each individual is encouraged to find their own expertise. Some people have a skill for skinning, some for gutting, and others for butchering. All parts of the buffalo have a use, whether it is for consumption, tool making, or ceremonial purposes.
Programming money was made available through the City of Lethbridge "N" initiative. Indigenous Curator Camina Manychief decided to use the funds to host a buffalo harvest. The meat from the harvest was distributed at the Ako'kaatsin camp that year. This initiative was part of the Galt Museum & Archives' relationship-building with the Kainai community.
This PDF contains 27 colour images from the harvest and a sheet of captions explaining each of the images.
Please note: Some of the images contain graphic content related to the harvesting of the animal. These image captions will have a * next to them.
