Weavers and Galt Preparing to Celebrate – Need Assistance

Lethbridge – The Galt Museum & Archives and Lethbridge Handicraft Guild of Weavers are seeking to connect with current and previous Lethbridge area members (or their descendants) who have weaving projects they would loan to the Galt for a juried show called “Woven in Time” — a partnership exhibition celebrating 65 years of Guild activity in Lethbridge to be shown at the Galt June 7 – September 1, 2014.

Beginning in 1949, Guild members gathered to create, learn, teach and display many of the arts considered to be handicraft, such as weaving, leatherwork, copper tooling, glove making, needlepoint, and pottery. The Weavers, as they are commonly known today, joined in 1951 and is an active and thriving organization which has recently moved into its new studio in CASA.

“The exhibit will include weavings from early Guild days alongside newly created pieces,” says Wendy Aitkens, Curator at the Galt. “It will also include photos of previous activities and projects, a working loom, and historic artifacts.”

“The Lethbridge handicraft guild of weavers appreciates the chance to share and celebrate weaving done by the members over the past 65 years,” says Sheila Jacobson, a long-time member of the Weavers.

If you have weaving pieces you are willing to loan for exhibition at the Galt Museum & Archives, there are several options: contact the Guild at lhg@yahoo.com or Exhibit Advisory Committee members Joanne Goldenjoanne.golden@uleth.ca or Judy Hasinoff: judy123@shaw.ca.
