Land Based Learning from Sandra Atwood

  • Fort Whoop-Up 200 Indian Battle Road South Lethbridge, AB T1J 5B3 Canada (map)

Join Sandra as we learn from her life, her stories, education, experience and the land while spending time walking around the River Bottom. Sandra Bartlett Atwood earned a BA in French, history, and secondary education (as well as after degree upgrades in biology and physics for teachers; an MS in American studies/folklore (with an emphasis in comparative interdisciplinary creation narratives); and a PhD in Environment and Society (with an emphasis in Blackfoot and Hawaiian ecological knowledge). As a worldview folklorist, Sandra has built enduring relationships with diverse Indigenous and local peoples over the years. She genuinely enjoys people and seeing the world through their eyes. As a folk ecologist, she has sought to understand what land means to various Indigenous peoples in order to better acknowledge (and educate others about) Indigenous People’s ongoing responsibilities and relationships to their traditional territories. As an Irish Canadian settler educator, scholar, and Indigenous ally who was born, raised, and currently resides in Niitsitapi territory, she grew up around Blackfoot culture and people all her life. Sandra has made many friendships within the Blackfoot community during her involvement in Cardston Minor Hockey, while teaching at Cardston Elementary School and Lethbridge Polytechnic, and through casual interactions as neighbors sharing the Cardston, Lethbridge, and Waterton areas of southern Alberta. Most recently, she completed a graduate-level certificate and diploma in Blackfoot ways offered through the University of Calgary Werkland School of Education which was a land-based, Elder-taught Master of Education program. Sandra currently teaches at Lethbridge Polytechnic as part of the Indigenous Studies team along with Jessica Fox and Marcia Black Water.
