Greetings everyone……My name is Lynn Gregson, and I’ve been volunteering at the Galt Museum for almost 10 years now in whatever capacity they ask me to volunteer in. This means that I have many volunteer “hats” - my favorite being bar tender as it’s very personal and I get to meet almost everyone who comes to one of the many, varied, fun, fascinating and special events that are held here.
I was raised in Lethbridge so I have a personal attachment to the Galt in that my father, Dr Lloyd Johnston, started his medical practice at the Galt Hospital delivering babies and caring for women as he was one of the only Obstetrician and Gynecologists in the city at that time.
My parents encouraged my 4 younger sisters and me to come to the Galt Museum to see the displays and learn more about our community after it went from being a hospital to a museum.
Because I was raised in Lethbridge, I love to see what the Galt is exhibiting around the history of this city - past and present. We live in a fascinating, rapidly growing city in a beautiful part of Southern Alberta. What a blessing that is. I believe that the Galt Museum does a wonderful job of reflecting this in their ever-changing exhibits, archives, entertaining events, interesting dynamic speakers and the beautiful gift shop that is so full of diverse items for purchase by local artists at a reasonable price.
There was a particular display that I was surprised to see and was very interested in in that it was a beautifully presented write up about a small White House that was located where the Lacidem Clinic is now on 6th Ave south. As it turns out that house was owned by my father, Dr Lloyd Johnston, and Dr Hall and was called “The Lethbridge Birth Control and Information Centre”. Both doctors were passionate about making sure that women had access to information about birth control and health care for women so creating this centre was very important to them.
So, in going to the Galt Museum you may be surprised to see someone or something that has played a part in your life - it’s endlessly surprising what is being shown here!!!! I encourage everyone I meet to volunteer here (so much fun!!) or attend one of the many amazing events and new displays that are being shown in the gallery. There is everything for everyone……so many families come to enjoy this fabulous facility.
Every month I look forward to seeing what exciting new events are being held here that I can volunteer for. It is truly a joyful experience for me, and I would encourage anyone who likes to volunteer to offer their services to help out at this wonderful venue in the heart of our city.
