Tell us a little about yourself!

I'm Victoria Lasalle, a recent Art History/Museum grad from the University of Lethbridge. I have an interest in Collections Management and the different ways to create engagement in the museum space. Some fun facts about me are that I enjoy golf, trying new gluten-free recipes and I know how to fence!

How was your experience volunteering with the Galt?

My experience with volunteering at the Galt has been amazing! I have had the opportunity to work with the public and learn about the community through the visitors; as well as through reading about the objects within the collection and the donors' connection to said object. It has also been great volunteering with Kevin and learning everything that he knows about the Galt’s collection.

What new experience or learnings did you take with you after being a volunteer with Collections at the Galt? Has this experience influenced or elevated your interest in museum work?

After volunteering I would say learning about the Galt’s collection process and the importance of recording the objects story from the donor has been the most influential experience/learning. Learning about this practice has definitely changed my mind set when working with the objects and will continue to influence the way I interact with any objects at an institution.

In your opinion, what was the most interesting artifact that was selected by a member of the community?

It is hard to say what is the most interesting object since there is such a diverse selection, each with their own story and materiality. My favourite object though would be the one Punkinhead Bear that was picked. This is because it is a relatable experience of getting gifted your favourite stuffed animal that acts as a vessel for holding all of your memories.

Any final thoughts?

Volunteering at the Galt has been a great opportunity and everyone I have met so far has been wonderful. I also can’t wait for everyone else to see and learn about the chosen objects!
