Harvest

Overview 

What will your harvest bring? Students must decide what to plant, spend and save to get their family through the Great Depression. This fast passed simulation draws on a plethora of primary sources including oral histories, newspapers and photographs to teach students about the economic hardships local families faced in the 1930s.

Written to complement the Grade 5 Social Studies curriculum. The program addresses the following curriculum objectives:

5.3.4  Assess, critically, how economic booms and crashes affected ways of life in Canada by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues:

  • In what ways did the Great Depression of the 1930s affect ways of life in urban and rural communities?
