Discover Cemetery History at the Galt Museum

Lethbridge, AB – For people who love to experience the history they weren’t taught in school, the Galt Museum & Archives’ Flashlight Cemetery Tours of Lethbridge's oldest burying ground, St. Patrick's Cemetery, is just the ticket. Galt Museum educator, Belinda Crowson guides a 50-minute tour for community members to discover Lethbridge history in a new light. “Cemeteries are integral to the story of every community for there are recorded the lives of the people who built our towns and of our community itself. Walking through the rows of graves we catch a glimpse of the realities of people’s lives, whether short or long, rich or poor, and we have a visual, palpable reminder of how we are all connected”, says Crowson. Tours are held on October 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 at various times after sunset. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $4 for annual pass holders at the Galt Museum store. Call 403.320-3954 to reserve your ticket today.

For those who can’t attend this popular event, rest assured the Galt Museum & Archives provides more opportunity to honour the human history that dwells in cemeteries. Photographer and guest curator Donna Kroeger’s exhibit special exhibit “Rural Cemeteries” opens on Friday, October 2, 2015 in the lower level gallery. The exhibit includes colour photographs captured by Kroeger as she searched for evocative images of crosses, monuments and markers in small rural cemeteries.
