"Archives Program" Continues Through Summer

The Archives Program at the Galt Museum & Archives continues through the spring and summer with monthly topics focusing on hands-on projects (from digitizing and storing images long term to conducting pioneer research) and local history (the oldest records in the Archives and the story of local parks) on Thursdays from 7:00-9:00 pm by Archivist Andrew Chernevych or special guests.

  • Thu MAY 09 From Album to Memory Stick Digitizing your family photographs is an effective way of preserving them. It also makes the images easy to copy and share with your loved ones! Learn how to scan photos, negatives and slides and store them digitally long term. Basic computer skills required.

  • Thu JUN 06 Parchment on the Prairies Ever wonder what the oldest records in the Galt Archives are? Come learn from researcher Jennifer Vanderfluit about 17th Century British parchments brought to Lethbridge by some of the earliest settlers: the Stafford family. Genealogists, historians, and the general public will find this of interest.

  • Thu JUL 18 Pioneer Records Online Eleanor McMurchy from the Lethbridge & District Genealogy Society will show how to use government records such as census and homestead files to research pioneer ancestors. Both databases are found online and provide an excellent addition to local archival resources.

  • Thu AUG 15 Walk Through the Park How were the treeless prairies of Lethbridge were transformed into a green urban landscape? Assistant Archivist Trish Purkis presents the history of local parks, touching on irrigation, city development and colourful personalities they were named after.

Admission fees apply for the program; registration is not required. Adults pay $6, seniors $5, and students $3, which includes exhibit access. The Discovery Hall and Museum Store are also open Thursdays from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. For details visit www.galtmuseum.com, call 403.320-3954, or email info@galtmuseum.com.
