Kevin McGeough will discuss how maps to ancient sites in science fiction and fantasy film and television are used to create imaginative moral geographies through which antiquity is invoked as a means of discussing the present. He will explore how archaeological theory (and especially the theory of the Victorian era) is used as the foundation for creating fantasy versions of the ancient past and how the use of imaginary maps by fictional archaeologists is related to arguments about progress, imperialism and identity.
