Powerful stories and memories surround
the objects we keep. When these treasures and curiosities are donated
to a museum, their associated stories also become a valuable part
of the communitys collective memory.
The fascination of historic objects is one of the foundations for
museum collections. There is intrigue in the vaults of a museum!
The Galt's Cultural History Collection
reflects stories of commerce, immigration, education, community
services, religion, transportation, military service, diversity
and the personal lives of individuals who chose to live in southwestern
Alberta.
Staff, Board members, volunteers and
Galt supporters from the community explored the Collection database
and shelves and choose their favourite artifacts for display in
this exhibit. An interesting selection is guaranteed!
Objects make us wonder
"Who
made this? Where was it made and used? What stories are there about
the people associated with the object? Are the stories happy or
sad, inspiring or confusing?"
A model of the solar system
is an interesting mechanical apparatus until
...we hear the story of a teacher
who tried to help his father understand the workings of our galaxy
with limited success. When the father visited the sons classroom
his son cranked the handle to make the planets revolve around
the sun. The teacher remembers, My father broke out into
peals of laughter and pleasure. I could see by the gleam in his
dark, brown eyes that he had finally understood something which
had eluded him for a long time.
Stories triggered by objects are not
all happy memories. A bedpan sent home with a convalescing
new mother proved deadly. The simple piece of hospital equipment
was contaminated and the mother contracted an infection and died,
leaving a widower and tiny twin babies.
You don't want to miss this exhibit!

Over the years, thousands of photos have been
requested by Galt visitors for their personal or business
use from the photographic record housed in the Galt Archives
- a rich resource of images, information and decorative
ideas! This exhibit features some favourite photographs
by local photographer William Fruet.
The William Fruet Fonds consists of 732 negatives
and prints. Almost all are landscape shots taken in the
foothills of southwestern Alberta. The rest deal with other
subjects, including Lethbridge street scenes and parades,
the Sons of Freedom sect of Doukhobors, Lethbridge schools,
teachers and students, and experimental portrait work.
William Fruet was born and raised in Zurich,
Switzerland. He emigrated to Canada in 1924, living first
in southern Saskatchewan and then in Lethbridge from 1926
until his death. He married Genevieve (Jenny) Louise Fruet
and the couple had two sons and two daughters: William (wife
Ida), Stanley, Maxine (Mrs. Gerald Ikle), and Carol (Mrs.
Tim Walker).
In 1938 Mr. Fruet opened Fruet Studio,
which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1972.
He specialized in portraits, child studies and graduation
photographs. For some years he was responsible for taking
class photographs in the Lethbridge public school system.
William Fruet was a member of the Miners Library
Club and the Labour Club. He died on 7 October 1973, age
67, and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery.

Artistic
Treasures & Curiosities
LOWER LEVEL GALLERY
"Art
is your emotions flowing
in a river of imagination."
Devin, Los Cerros Middle School, 1999
Our art collection reflects the work of artists from
southwestern Alberta or images stimulated by the area,
in a wide spectrum of media from pencil, ink, watercolour
and oil, to found objects and fiber.
Subject matter and personal perspective is as varied
as the land, people and events in the region.
People respond to art in very personal ways, choosing
that which resonates with their personality, sense of
colour, a memory or meaningful relationship.
Staff members gleaned through the collection and found
pieces that had meaning for them. By reflecting on this
"river of imagination"you may even gain insight
into the staff psyche!
