In 2008, the construction of the Lethbridge Viaduct or, as local people call it, the High Level Bridge, was recognized as a significant National Historic Event by Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. In 2009, we celebrate the Centennial of the completion of the bridge across the Oldman River Valley.

As the longest bridge of its kind in Canada, some say in the world, it has become an identifiable icon for this region. It is an image that has been and continues to be captured regularly by artists and photographers.

Communities maintain their identity by acknowledging and commemorating significant events from their past. This bridge and the Canadian Pacific Railway made Lethbridge a major transportation hub and contributed significantly to the economy of southern Alberta. Come celebrate with us!

Superintendent's Car M602, Lethbridge Division Of The Canadian Pacific Railway, April 18, 1959. P20081024000

There was no room to include this 1938 CPR Superintendent's Car in the Discovery Hall! Instead, it is on display at Davis Pontiac Buick GMC in Lethbridge at the Auto Mall along Crownest Trail [115 WT Hill Blvd S] from JUN 20-SEP 20, 2009. It was adapted from a 1938 Chevrolet for use by the Superintendent, and was donated to the Galt Museum in 1967 by Canadian Pacific Railway.

100th Anniversary
of the Bridge

Mon JUN 22 | 3:00-5:00 pm | Indian Battle Park, Coalbanks Kiosk

One hundred years ago, on June 22, 1909, the last steel span was put in place in the construction of the CPR High Level Bridge. That same day, the first train load of 100 dignitaries and visitors crossed the bridge.

This year, join us for cake, games and other festivities marking this important historic event, including:

3:00 pm GAMES The way a bridge works is a lot like playing tug-of-war when there's no winner. See if you can make the best bridge.

3:30 pm PRESENTATION: "In the Shadow of the Bridge" The High Level Bridge is our city's claim to fame but what do the animals think about it? Get a "bird's eye view" of this well-known landmark with a nature interpreter from the Helen Schuler Nature Centre.

4:30 pm TRAIN PIÑATA Will there be coal or candy inside this piñata custom-built by a Galt volunteer?
