Polska, Kraina Przodkow (Land of My Forefathers)

"This exhibition of eight lithographs and collographs is a tribute to my father and through him, my Polish relatives with whom I reestablished contact after fifty years of no communication. The brief time I recently spent with my family in Poland has opened new doors of understanding into the shaping of that country, my grandparents, my father and thus myself. Events beyond their control have shaped the lives of all people born in Poland. In reflection my work depicts both love and abhorrence. I have a new found love for my father's family, their land, and the struggles of their nation. Through their eyes I have intensified my abhorrence for a man, a time, a movement and those whose thoughts and/or actions echo such depravity.

"I have read of the subject in books and watched documentaries but still I was not emotionally prepared for the turmoil engulfing me while walking the vast block of land known as Auschwitz. Photographs taken on site were transformed through digital imagery to reflect the haunting images in my mind. I chose lithography as a medium to pay homage to people I never knew, but for whom I shed tears. Photolithography allowed me to superimpose what was and what is. I hope the viewer will take a few moments to consider that each person who was murdered in that camp deserved a future that was never fulfilled."

Patricia Margaret Grayston
BA, BEd, BFA

During her profession as a teacher, Pat Grayston strove to increase her knowledge and proficiency through art classes at both a community level and university level. In 1985, she became the art teacher for the high school in which she taught. Upon retiring in 1999, she studied at the University of South Australia for a year, pursuing photography, painting and bronze casting. Pat returned to the University of Saskatchewan and completed a BFA with Great Distinction in 2003, receiving the silver medal of excellence.

Since that time she has moved and renovated her father's 1956 barn into an art studio, Riverview Arts. The loft houses her custom built intaglio printing press. While intaglio and woodcuts are Pat's primary focus, she teaches painting and pottery, and creates her own paintings and pottery. Grayston serves on the Canadian Artists Representation/Le front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC) Board as well as the Board of the Art Gallery of Prince Albert.
