"Hatsumi" film screening | Q&A with Chris Hope

Hatsumi [2012, 55 min] is Japanese Canadian filmmaker Chris Hope's stunning look at the internment of Canadians of Japanese ancestry through the experiences and diaries of his 80-year old grandmother, Nancy Hatsumi Okura.

On a trip with Chris to the west coast locations of her internment, Nancy opens up about her family's war-time experiences for the first time. On their journey, Nancy's story comes to life in vivid detail, leading grandmother and grandson through the Japanese-Canadian internment, across Canada and, unexpectedly, to Japan.

Join the Nikkei Cultural Society of Lethbridge & District for the screening followed by a Skype question and answer period with Chris Hope.

The evening starts with a special screening of the locally produced animation Relocation [2014, 4 min].

presented with

Nikkei Cultural Society of Lethbridge and Area

"An extraordinary and beautiful film… exhaustively and passionately researched, both at the level of the filmmaker's personal history and as an investigation into our national consciousness."

Atom Egoyan, Academy Award® Nominated Director of The Devil's Knot.

"A beautifully crafted documentary that never once loses its innate humanity whilst portraying the rampant inhumanity that surrounded these hapless citizens of Canada. Fierce, loving, strong, poetic."

Deepa Mehta, Academy Award® nominated director of Midnight's Children

Earth Hour 2014
Community Gathering

 the Galt during Earth Hour

In 2013, individuals, business and institutions in more than 7001 cities and towns across 152 countries & territories participated in Earth Hour - turning off lights on landmarks and homes in former war-torn countries to the great cities of Europe, and going beyond the hour...

This year in Lethbridge, we are partnering with the University of Lethbridge Environmental Sciences Club to create a community gathering. We'll start inside at 7:30 pm with some fun activities, then move outdoors to the patio from 8:30-9:30 [Earth Hour] for more fun as we shut off our lights on the 1910 Galt Hospital facade and all other non-essential lights.

We also go beyond the hour by turning these lights off EVERY DAY at 1:00 am - following any facility rentals - instead of lighting up the building all night.

Back in the day... there was a time when global power use had a negligible impact. With an increasing population comes increased demand for natural resources. Earth Hour brings attention to the collective global impact of minimizing resource use that goes beyond turning off lights for an hour. It has evolved from a symbolic action into a continuous movement driving big and small actions.
