Pencil Crayon Drawing, ca. 1897

Created locally by E.F. Hagell at the age of 2 years. Donated by the artist's grandson, donor believes it is E.F. Hagell's earliest surviving work. The unique work of E.F. Hagell was confined exclusively to prairie and mountain scenes of western Canada. He wished, through his work, to preserve the history of the early days of the west before mechanization was introduced. Hagell received international recognition, creating about 1500 works during his career as an artist. He had a great love for the prairies and farming, and was a great storyteller. The Galt holds a large collection of Hagell works.

Donated by Dalton Hagell
