Moratorium on Donations
To ensure the safety of its extensive
collections during the expansion of the Galt, the Board of Directors
for the museum approved the relocation of the nearly 20,000 artifacts
during the construction period and a subsequent moratorium on donations
to the collections.
"The relocation represents the
most intensive, resource-demanding project the Collections Department
has undertaken in its forty-year history," says Kevin MacLean,
the Galt's Collections Manager. "We ask donors be patient
in the interim and hold on to their treasures until the collection
is returned to the Galt at the end of 2005."
Access to the collections closed May
1 as the enormous task of preparing the collection for the move
got underway. Since 1962, the collections
have grown to include artifacts and artworks representing the human
history of Lethbridge and southern Alberta; 10 per cent of the material
is recorded as pre-1900.
Businesses, organizations and individuals
interested in submitting donations to the collections are asked
to contact Kevin MacLean at 403.320-4064.
