Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt, ca. 1847
Oil on canvas
P20060025005

Portrait features Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt, Father of Confederation and Canadian entrepreneur. A.T. Galt was born in London in 1817, the son of John Galt, developer of the Huron Tract in Ontario. His political career took him to high office in Sir John A. MacDonald's administration, where he became one of the Fathers of Confederation.

In the late nineteenth century Galt's business career led him to develop, with his son Elliott, a handful of Lethbridge-based resource, transportation and irrigation companies. As a result, Galt is credited with founding and fostering many of the economies in early southern Alberta towns and cities, including Lethbridge.

The painting is signed Lanair. It was presented by Senator W.A. Buchanan to Lethbridge City Council on October 25th , 1948. A picture of Charles A. Magrath, first Mayor of Lethbridge, was also presented at this Council meeting.
