Javelin Trainer Missile Set, c. 1992 - 2005
P20060013000

This missile trainer system was used by the 18th Air Defence (AD) Regiment, based in Lethbridge, Alberta.

The S-15 Javelin was a short-range (5.5 km), mach 1.7 speed missile used to counter hostile aircraft at low altitudes. The Trainer allowed for the individual instruction of the Regiment’s soldiers before they proceeded to a live fire exercise. Four trainers were used by 18AD and, according to the retired Regimental Warrant Officer Glenn Miller, any one of them could be used in a “class setting or in the field with live aircraft”.

In the early 1990s, the Canadian Army implemented ‘Total Force’ as a way to solve its manpower shortage. The trial concept brought together regular force and reservist soldiers at Air Defence units across Canada. Lethbridge was selected as one of three sites in 1992 where the concept was put into action.

Shortfalls identified with the Trainer led to the development of a Canadian-built Javelin simulator which was installed in the Lethbridge Armoury in the late 1990s. The Trainer remained in service for individual training while the new simulator allowed for the testing of an entire 3-man Javelin detachment.

The CF withdrew the Javelin missile from its inventory in 2004. No alternate missile system replaced the Javelin and its role in the Canadian Forces was abandoned. Consequently, Javelin units, such as 18AD, were reassigned to other tasks. In March 2005, the 18th AD Regiment engaged in Exercise Blazing Archer at CFB Suffield, AB for the very last time, firing 73 Javelin missiles. The Trainer was donated to the Galt in 2006.
