Traditional Slovakian Costume, ca. 1930-1950 Woman's dress worn by Katherina (Katie) Brecka who, in 1938 and at age 30, emigrated with her family to Canada from Czechoslovakia in 1938. Although limited by what she could bring to Canada, Brecka brought the dress to southern Alberta because it represented her best set of clothing and because it was an important reminder of her home. The dress was worn by her on special occasions, including weddings, festivals, dances and church services. Unaware that the dress type was not common fashion in Canada she was remembered saying, "I never thought dresses were different in this country, now I go to Eaton's."
