Portrait features subject Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt, Father of Confederation and Canadian entrepreneur. In the late nineteenth century, Galt's career led him to develop a handful of Lethbridge-based resource, transportation and irrigation companies through which he and his son Elliott. As a result, Galt is credited with founding and fostering many of the economies in early southern Alberta towns and cities, including Lethbridge.

The painting is signed Lanair. It was presented to Lethbridge City Council on October 25th , 1948.
