Bread Maker and Bread Pan, ca. 1933-1960
P20060015001-2

Bread Maker and Pan originally used by Oto Kanashiro, who emigrated to Canada from Japan in 1930. Kanashiro joined her husband in Hardieville, where approximately fifty Okinawan families resided on the northern outskirts of Lethbridge. There, she quickly learned how to manage a household and was taught, among other things, how to bake bread.

Kanashiro perfected the art of bread making, baking five to eight large loaves at a time. She made the bread from yeast, wheat flour and liquid from boiled potatoes. For variety, she would make cinnamon buns or dinner buns from the same bread dough and, occasionally, donuts and Japanese Karinto. It was not until her children began leaving her home in the 60s that the equipment fell into gradual disuse.
