This
wooden letter opener was one of many souvenirs brought back from the
Phillipines by Reverend G.G. Nakayama. Originally from Vancouver, Reverend
Nakayama worked as a missionary and speaker for the Japanese Anglican
Mission. After the Second World War, his family moved from Slocan City
where they were interned. Deciding to relocate to Coaldale, Alberta,
Reverend Nakayama there founded the Anglican Church of Ascension. The
letter opener was donated by the Reverend's daughter, author Joy Kogawa.
