To ensure the safety of its extensive collections during the expansion of the Galt, the Board of Directors for the museum approved the relocation of the nearly 20,000 artifacts during the construction period and a subsequent moratorium on donations to the collections. "The relocation represents the most intensive, resource-demanding project the Collections Department has undertaken in its forty-year history," says Kevin MacLean, the Galt's Collections Manager. Since 1962, the collections have grown to include artifacts and artworks representing the human history of Lethbridge and southern Alberta; 10 per cent of the material is recorded as pre-1900.
